The SI Evening Talk of November 29, 2022, hosted at isolutions AG, was devoted to the complex topic of medical data: “Data for the Benefit of the Patient”.
Today, Switzerland is still struggling in many ways to find its path forward in handling medical data and addressing the opportunities as well as the challenges that come with it. The collection and analysis of medical data offers new ways of diagnosis and can push the development for new treatments. However, the potential for abuse is also large, be it inadvertently through data leaks or through discriminatory practices, for example, denying access to healthcare based on data. As discussed in the previous SI evening talk on data protection (“New Federal Act on Data Protection (nFDPA): Application and Impact for Citizens and Enterprises“), the loss of control over one’s data is always at the forefront when handling sensitive data. This fear notwithstanding, the topic demands consideration.
SI vice president Dr. Nora Sleumer moderated this event, which brought together three distinguished speakers who shared their perspectives on the topic:
Dr. Carsten Danzer (Innovation Delivery Lead, Healthcare Industry, Roche),
Dr. Elke Mittendorf (Data Governance Manager, University Hospital Zurich), and
Prof. emeritus Dr. Ernst Hafen (ETH Zurich).

The discussion of a digital form of ID has been ongoing in Switzerland for years now. After an option was rejected at the ballot in 2021, the government has moved to explore other avenues. While the Swiss Administration is still working on an acceptable solution and does not expect to present one until 2025 at the earliest, other countries have already implemented their own versions. The world’s largest biometric ID system, Aadhaar, was established in India in 2009 and is used not just for identification purposes but also as voter ID, driver‘s license, for food security measures and more. This has simplified a number of administrative processes, but new challenges with enrolment and data security arose. SI believes that we can learn a lot by looking at existing systems. In an online talk, Indukumar Vellapillil-Hari introduced SI members to the complexities and opportunities of the Indian solution but also the challenges that come with it. Indukumar also presented at the SITC 2023.
Our Speaker
Indukumar Vellapillil-Hari has around 24 years of experience in software development, architecture, management and has written a book on programming. He is currently an enterprise architect with Credit Suisse with cross domain responsibilities. Having been born and raised in India, Indukumar is excited about Aadhaar’s potential to bring about transformative changes to the Indian society..

As part of our SI Evening Talk series, a series of events where we facilitate discussion of various IT topics, SI invited Danilo Biella to Geneva to share his perspectives on the current state of Agile.
Agile software development emerged in the early 2000s as a response to the limitations of traditional software development methodologies, such as the waterfall model. The Agile Manifesto, created by a group of software developers in 2001, outlined a set of values and principles for agile software development.
Agile emphasizes collaboration, flexibility, and responsiveness to change. Instead of a rigid, linear process, Agile is iterative and focuses on delivering working software in small, incremental steps. This allows teams to respond to feedback and changing requirements quickly.

You are cordially invited to the third workshop of the DBTA series "Data Management meets Machine Learning" on "Data Management for AI and Machine Learning" that will take place on Wednesday June 5, 2024 from 14:00 - 18:00 at Technopark Zurich. The workshop will feature presentations on two key topics:
1. Time Series and Vector Databases: have emerged as a promising solution for efficiently storing and querying large volumes of (time-stamped) data and high-dimensional data. Many big datasets (especially in AI and ML) but also in business applications have such properties. The workshop will introduce an open-source time series database that is optimized for high performance transaction processing and an open-source vector database that is tailored (but not exclusively applicable) to multimedia indexing and retrieval.
2. Retrieval-Augmented Generation: The workshop will explore and showcase the concept and potential of retrieval-augmented generation, which combines the strengths of both retrieval and generation models to improve the quality and relevance of generated output. We will discuss different methodologies, architectures, and case studies that illustrate the application of retrieval-augmented generation in various concrete use cases.
Speakers:
- Philip Eschenbacher (Principal Solution Architect, MongoDB):
Leveraging Generative AI with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)
- Ralph Gasser (University of Basel): From Theory to Practical
Applications: Research Insights into Vector Databases with Cottontail DB
- Nicolas Hourcard (QuestDB)
- Guido Schmutz (Senior Manager & Architect Accenture, Lecturer FH
Bern): Introducing Graph RAG - enhancing Language Models with external knowledge
Participation is free of charge. But in order to facilitate the logistics, we like to ask all participants to register.

Annually, the Swiss OpenGLAM working group unites cultural institutions, software developers, digital humanists, artists, Wikipedians, and other enthusiasts with a shared goal of advancing openness within galleries, libraries, archives, and museums (GLAM). Within the collaborative environment of GLAMhack, we engage in joint experimentation and innovation, exploring the realms of cultural content and digital tools. Our focus spans research initiatives, web and mobile applications, Wikipedia, and various other applications, all aimed at fostering openness and creativity.
Under the theme “On the Move” GLAMhack24 objective is to trace the movements of individuals to and from Switzerland and further away, capturing the imprints they leave within cultural heritage collections such as images and letters. Our aim is to reintroduce these historical footprints to present-day users. Additionally, we envision the capability to transport individuals through time, allowing them to experience the discovery of artifacts firsthand. Join us for GLAMhack24 (29-30.9) at the Zentral- und Hochschulbibliothek Luzern (ZHB), where creativity meets innovation. Create prototypes utilizing open cultural data to enhance the digital transformation of the GLAM sector.
The GLAMhack24 official program starts on Friday, but we are working on a possibility to participate in a side programme already on Thursday.

Fundamental changes are on the horizon in the energy sector. The end of the service life of nuclear power plants calls for the development of diverse, regenerative and decentralized energy technologies, such as geothermal energy, wind and solar technology. Digital tools are being used in more and more areas in order to optimize and stabilize the interplay between energy supply, use and storage.
Hackathons bring together energy experts, analysts, data scientists, programmers, students and interested people from all disciplines to work together with team spirit and enthusiasm on solutions to concrete problems. Take part!
We are happy to announce that after the good experiences and results of the Hackdays since 2019, the next edition of the Energy Data Hackdays will take place in Brugg-Windisch with existing and new partners. Committed to tradition.

With the advent of large language models and generative AI tools such as ChatGPT or Github Copilot, the old dream of automated programming seems to come true: stakeholders describe their problem and a machine generates the code that solves the problem. So, are we at the edge of a revolution, where generative AI is making software engineering obsolete? Or are we currently experiencing a wave of hype that will leave us disillusioned when the wave is over?
We have invited experts in the field to discuss this topic. In two keynotes and a panel, they will discuss the impact of generative AI on the future of software engineering.
In the first keynote, Bertrand Meyer will present his view on the state of the art and the future of software engineering. In the second keynote, Dylan Beattie will look at innovations that, with hindsight, have changed the world and what that means for understanding the impact of AI.
In a panel moderated by Martin Glinz (UZH), the panelists will discuss the opportunities and the challenges of AI in software engineering. Panelists are -- besides the speakers -- Daniel Zeiter (Ergon), Dimitris Andreadis (Red Hat) and Patrick Schnell (schnell.digital)

The SI Group SAUG is holding regular APL Labs at the Hotel Kreuz in Jona. With presentations on various APL topics, the group discusses and explores various applications of APL. APL (A Programming Language) was originally conceived as a mathematical/logical notation, developed in the 1960s by Kenneth E. Iverson, a young Harvard lecturer, but came to be used as a programming language. The power of APL operators/functions is due to their automatic data structure penetration and special operators. This eliminates the need for many control structures. Nested data structures (nested arrays) were added with the 2nd APL generation, making it the ideal tool to process data from relational databases where SQL reaches its limits.

Not a day goes by without some news about a new ransomware victim, a data breach, a supply chain attack, or a new clever malware strain. Yet, while IT constantly evolves, the risks we face today were known 20 years ago. So what’s going on?
At the next SI Evening Talk “Cybersecurity: Beyond the Hype”, we will talk with security consultant Stefan Dydak about how IT infrastructures fail. From seemingly mundane topics such as asset management to exciting ones like Zero Trust, AI and IoT, we will cover what changed, and what hasn’t, small companies and large ones. Based on five real life cases and lessons learned we will paint a clear picture of what really matters when it comes to building a successful cybersecurity program.
This is a free event, but registration is required.

You are cordially invited to the fourth workshop of the DBTA series "Data Management meets Machine Learning" on "Data Management and Information Retrieval meet LLMs" that will take place on Monday January 20, 2025, 14:00 - 18:00 at the Université de Fribourg, Département d'informatique, Boulevard de Pérolles 90, CH-1700 Fribourg, room PER 21 C230. The workshop will be followed by the General Assembly of DBTA (a separate invitation to the GA was already sent).
Participation is free of charge. But in order to facilitate the logistics, we like to ask all participants to register.
Workshop topic: The rapid advancement in natural language processing (NLP) and information retrieval (IR) technologies is transforming how we manage, search, and interpret data. Large language models (LLMs) have revolutionized data management and information retrieval, offering new possibilities for enhancing user interaction, classification, and retrieval tasks. These recent evolutions raise the bar for the quality of data and labeling techniques that the algorithms exploit. This workshop brings together researchers and practitioners to explore cutting-edge developments in these domains, with a focus on bridging database research and intelligent information retrieval.
The workshop will foster collaboration between researchers, practitioners, and industry experts to drive innovation in this rapidly evolving field.
Speakers:
- Dr. Silvia Quarteroni - Data Science center of EPFL (https://people.epfl.ch/silvia.quarteroni): "Recent advances in NLP and information retrieval"
- Dr. Ivan Sekulic - Telepathy Lab (https://www.telepathy.ai/): "Can LLMs help in understanding users for dialog systems? User simulation and user frustration detection"
- Dr. Julien Audiffren - Université de Fribourg, eXascale Infolab (https://exascale.info/julien_audiffren/): "XML - eXtreme Multi-Label classification - Reinforcing automatic labeling with taxonomies"
